Past Legislative Successes

2001 - Expansion of Assault Weapons Ban

  • Expands definition of assault weapons
  • Bans certain types of 50-caliber bullets
  • Requires persons under restraining orders to turn over guns within two days
  • Requires issuing authority to revoke permit for individuals subject to firearms seizure

1999 - Firearm Safety Law

  • Allows police to confiscate all visible weapons during a domestic violence arrest and hold them for up to 48 hours
  • Requires individuals who sell guns at retail to take a safety and use course and to undergo a background check
  • Allows police to confiscate guns from individuals who are dangerous but have committed no crime
  • Allows for civil liability when minors commit crimes with guns

1998 - Checks, Locks and Traces

  • Required a FBI background fingerprint check
  • Required reusable trigger locks on all sales
  • Required all guns found at a crime scene to be traced

1994 - Limits Established on Who Can Own Handguns

  • Required background check, including secondary sales
  • Required safety and use course
  • Prohibited ownership of hand guns for: felony conviction, violent misdemeanor conviction, protective/restraining order, involuntarily commitment to a mental institution, illegal alien

1993 - Ban on the Sale of Assault Weapons

1991 - Guns and Kids

  • Required trigger locks at retail Guns must be stored and locked
  • Criminal liability for adult if child commits crime with a gun

1990 - Gun Storage Law

  • Required a two-week waiting period before the purchase of a handgun
